careers

October 29, 2008 By: glen Category: Academia, Academic Work, Magazine, Other Work, Writing

Not wanting to get too ahead of myself, as things are still in the works, but I could have the opportunity for a career change (following up from this). It may happen or not. They are still interviewing and I said I would have to weigh up the options. What do you all think?

It is a fulltime journalist writing gig and back to my roots, you might say, at a magazine publisher. Money wise it is only a little less than the money have been earning this year as a casual academic.

I realise that I probably would not get an academic position without having a book and at least a few articles under my belt based on my actual research. I think I am actually more likely to get a book contract working for a magazine than for a university. I also stated I would like to return to academia in a few years after I have produced some publications. Having some trade experience can only be a good thing, too.

Anyway, like I said, they still need to interview one more candidate, so nothing is certain. Let me know what you think, in comments or email. It is a bit of a life changing decision.

For my forthcoming publications I guess I’d become an ‘independent researcher’!

neologism: ‘boo woot’

October 27, 2008 By: glen Category: Funny, Politics

boo woot: compound neologism used to heckle a disaffected loser of a competition. Combination, in part, derived from ‘boo’ as in ‘boo hoo’; a sarcastic exclamation of (non) empathy. ‘woot’ is an acronymn of We Owned Other Team. Alternatively spelled w00t or w007.

Example: Obama triumphantly exclaimed, “Boo woot, McCain. Boo woot!”

precariat tilt: harried tarrying

October 23, 2008 By: glen Category: Academic Work, Life

I’ve become something of a generalist; a genericist, teaching anything that anyone wants at any time. Someone jokes I should get a scooter and a pager and teach emergency philosophy, seeing as I’m constantly running around teaching as if on call anyway.

IT on the state of her life. The above is familiar. I am looking forward to teaching a course again. Not because of the course, but because of the ‘again’.

I like IT’s post. Especially the contradictory dimensions of too-much/not-enough work, impersonal/personable relations, and giving up/losing. It has a fervent stalled energy of harried tarrying, of rushing on the spot.

writerly?

October 17, 2008 By: glen Category: Magazine, Modified Cars, Other Work

Just finished a 1000-1500 word test article as part of an application for a magazine staff writer job. Due 4pm tomorrow. I got home from work at 7:30pm this evening. I work 9am-4pm teaching tomorrow with an hour lunch break break. That is why it is 3am and finally done…

Anyway, yes, exciting. Perhaps more so after some shut eye. Plus I was meant to catch up with some mates this evening, but couldn’t.

death to the rhizome

October 14, 2008 By: glen Category: Academic Work, Deleuze

I am way behind on two book reviews. One of the volumes is an edited collection of essays primarily using the work of Deleuze (and Guattari). I am happy to report that the concept of the rhizome is not invoked in any substantial way. Once it is finished I shall post a draft version here.

conservative ignorance and performative stupidity

October 10, 2008 By: glen Category: Politics, Stupidity

Way back when in the ancient 07s, I made this comment about the profound ignorance of various commentators on the Mickler & Lucy Online Opinion pieces:

Is this how a participatory online intellectual space functions? With a thought provoking work published online only so people can comment on how *they don’t understand the piece*!! Do people assume when they read something they don’t understand to then imagine that it is perfectly sensible to announce their own ignorance? And then somehow use it as a weapon against whatever the text they are not understanding?!?!?! The “If I don’t understand it, then it must be nonsense” attack.

Isn’t this another plank in the floor of the ‘postmodern left’ that Lucy and Mickler are denouncing? Not the left that thinks using some postmodernist tools, but the arm of the Left that is actually postmodern. Instead of trying to enlighten people by going go to war against stupidity, a *reified stupidity* is itself used as an (anti)intellectual weapon and seemingly a badge of honour.

The performative stupidity of conservative ignorance has made a few folks in the US scratch their respective heads when engaging with the Palin/McCain supporters:

The things that has always alarmed me most about the right wing Republican/conservative/FOX News-watching types is how they wear their own IGNORANCE as a badge of honor! I can’t get my head around the notion of how unashamed they are of their own ignorance. It used to be that abject stupidity was something to be embarrassed about. Is it somehow now HIP these days to be a total dumbass? Did I miss the memo?

Waiter! There is teh internets in my dinner…

October 08, 2008 By: glen Category: Funny, Sydney, WORLD DOMINATION

Idea: Cabaret dinner theatre/bar where the main drawcard over Thursday-Sunday nights involves performers acting out the top five clips from youtube the day before. Two performances a night perhaps, one at 6:30 and one at 9:30. Tourist attraction? Finite sized establishment would introduce a weird new dynamic into the question of access. I am pretty sure with this sort of conceptual pop-culture approach you’d get the talent. Name? Youtube: The Musical

Each performance would be filmed and put back onto youtube. Thus entertaining the possibility, if the clip of a performance of a clip is the most popular clip on youtube, of a self-referential cabaret dinner theatre/bar infinite regress paradox that would destroy the universe.

POP!
